Cooking Class in Ubud

Ubud is famous for its’ great variety of good and healthy food. No wonder, cooking classes are spread over the village in the heart of Bali. With such a great choice, it can be difficult to choose a cooking class. We chose Pulu Cooking Class as we read not many (at that time 4 reviews) but only excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. And we wouldn’t have been disappointed.

The booking process was simple. The girl at the reception from Gayatri Bungalows 2 gave the manger of the cooking class a call and that was it. (one word to Gayatri Bungalows: if you want to indulge in the beautiful pool, have one of the best breakfasts in Indonesia and pay almost no money: ask for the “Staff room” on top of the building. It is a simple room (once the staff room) but you have the best view over Ubud and you can enjoy the same ammenities as the other guests while paying so little (was 180.000 in 2014)).

How to get to Pulu’s house: Don’t worry about the transport. You will be picked up by Pulu and her uncle in an air-conditioned van. They will also bring you back to your accomodation. IMG_0354

What to expect: expect a day full of cooking, chatting and laughing.

How does the day look like? First, you will head to a local market a little outside of Ubud to go grocery shopping. Since it was only me and my boyfriend that booked the tour that day, we had plenty of time to ask Pulu everything about the specialties of Indonesia. She also bought a fresh fish for us that we would prepare afterwards!DSC02544

Once at Pulu’s house, we were given an apron and a cooking hat to keep the hair out of the face. We prepared so many meals, it’s unbelievable! We even made Satai Chicken Sticks on the open fire like the Balinese do on special festivites!

Everything was home-made and we were involved in the whole process. We could ask anything and it was a nice morning and afternoon at Pulu’s house! We can highly recommend this cooking class. We cooked so many dishes that there were leftovers that we gave Pulu’s family.

If you want to have a private tour in a relaxed atmosphere and learn about Balinese life, attend Pulu’s class!
