Even more things to eat in Gongguan, Taipei

My second entry about where and what to eat in Gongguan, Taipei is supposed to give you a overview about other places that are worth visiting but nothing like the ones I described before in the Must-Eats blog entry.

Again we will start from the Prince House Dormitory if you turn right and take the left road at the next intersection you will end up at one of the many seemingly never green turning traffic lights. Right across the street however is the second floor cafe this is one of the restaurants that is impossible to miss because of its size. The food here is quite expensive compared to the other places you can eat in the area and not really worth it either. They have free wifi which only works some times and a menu with many strange sounding meals. It is quite big though with two floors of seating which makes it a save choice for group meetings.

If you walk past the pet store you will end up at another big intersection where the police station is located at. At this intersection you will find a very good bubble tea shop https://goo.gl/maps/DQGymxLVcNK2 as well as a restaurant where you can try the sesame noodles which sadly isn’t on google maps. On you’re left, a little bit down the road are two different interesting shops. One is called 咖哩 something, which tells you already they’re selling different types of curry. It is a very narrow shop between to different stores and has no direct google maps link but I’ll place a picture of google street view and an approximate location https://goo.gl/maps/hCFFXu5r4BC2 down below. On the other side of the street is a place where you can get the lu rou fan (滷肉饭) the very popular taiwanese dish. They also sell only rice and many other things for take away and sometimes also in the very late hours!

After you reached the famous bubble tea store again take a right and follow the diagonal street you will end up at the back entrance to a restaurant that serves very tasty and very spicy beef noodles. It is a very nice place to come to even though it is not spacious and can be difficult to find a seat. It is located close to the https://goo.gl/maps/jhnQn1rRwTU2 store but the google street view picture is below this paragraph.

Further down the big road there is a good shop for another taiwanese specialty. The 兄弟蚵仔麵線 sells the oyster vermicelli (蚵仔麵線) which is a very popular soup in Taiwan and a little bit strange if you try it for the first time. It is basically noodles in a very thick soup containing oysters and of course pig intestines. Very yummy and very cheap!

Not the oyster soup from the store in the text but from the most famous one in Taipei in Ximending.

If you’re looking for another place in the area that is open 24h that isn’t McDonalds or the Chinese breakfast place I’ve written before in the previous blog entry you can go to Yoshinoy which is a very overpriced place to eat some Korean dishes.

If you’re feeling adventurous and are willing to walk a bit further you can be rewarded by going to a Hong-Kong style BBQ place. It is called 鳳城燒臘百合店, is very spacious and very reasonable priced for either roasted chicken or duck with rice and a delicious sauce.

In the same area, right in front of the park is a place called 蠶居. This is a Taiwanese restaurant which is also very reasonable priced and has a lot of tasty dishes, free iced tea and free herbal tea!

These are some more restaurants and places to go to if you are in the Gongguan area for a longer time. Maybe as an exchange student? Sure there are a lot more places you can go to but I’ve highlighted only those you should be aware of and what to get or not to get there. If you don’t want to go out every day and get something in a restaurant however you can also cook on you’re own. Where to get all the stuff you need to cook in the dormitories is coming in another blog entry.
